Waterproofing Comes Before Design
- check_circle
Waterproofing is the part nobody sees
A poorly waterproofed bathroom causes seepage into the flat below, and fixing it after tiling means breaking the floor again. This is the one stage in the entire project worth never cutting corners on.

Layout constrained by existing plumbing
Moving the drain point and water supply lines is possible but expensive. A layout that works within the existing plumbing points usually costs considerably less.
- check_circle
Ventilation matters as much as fixtures
An exhaust fan or window that actually clears moisture is what prevents the mould and mildew that ruin a bathroom design within a year.

Fixture quality against your budget
Branded sanitaryware and CP fittings cost more upfront but the tap and flush mechanisms fail far less often — a real saving over a decade.
Indicative Renovation Cost
| Scope | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Basic — retiling, standard fixtures | ₹1.2L – ₹2.2L |
| Premium — full renovation, branded fixtures | ₹2.5L – ₹4.5L |
| Waterproofing only (per bathroom) | ₹15,000 – ₹30,000 |
For a standard 35-50 sq.ft bathroom. Layout changes involving plumbing relocation cost materially more.

Waterproofing Before Anything Else
Bathroom design is the one area of interior work where getting the sequence wrong is genuinely expensive to fix. Waterproofing has to happen before tiling, and a shortcut here — however invisible at handover — surfaces as seepage into the flat below, often only after a full monsoon has passed.
Getting The Sequence Right

Waterproofing first, always
A membrane treatment on the floor and up the walls to at least shower height, tested with a water-ponding check before tiling begins. This single step prevents the majority of future seepage complaints.

Plan around existing plumbing where possible
Moving the drain point is possible but expensive, since it usually involves breaking the floor slab. A layout that respects existing plumbing points is meaningfully cheaper.

Ventilation is not optional
An exhaust fan sized to the room, or a window where the layout allows, prevents the mould and mildew that undermine even a well-executed design within a year.

Fixture and fitting quality
Branded sanitaryware and CP fittings cost more upfront, but the taps and flush mechanisms fail meaningfully less often — a real saving over a decade of daily use.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if waterproofing was done properly?
Ask your contractor to demonstrate a water-ponding test before tiling — flooding the waterproofed area with a measured water level for 24 to 48 hours and checking for any seepage from below. A contractor unwilling to do this test is a warning sign worth taking seriously.
Can I change the layout of my bathroom?
Yes, but changing the drain or main water supply point involves breaking the floor and typically adds significant cost and time versus keeping the existing plumbing points. Minor changes, like moving a washbasin, are usually straightforward.
What tile size works best for a small bathroom?
Larger format tiles with fewer grout lines tend to make a small bathroom feel less busy and are also easier to keep clean, though they need a genuinely level substrate to lay well.
Is a glass shower partition worth the cost?
It keeps the rest of the bathroom drier and reads as more contemporary than a shower curtain, at a meaningful additional cost. In a smaller bathroom it can also make the space feel larger by avoiding a solid partition wall.
How long does a full bathroom renovation take?
Typically 15 to 25 days, with waterproofing curing time being a fixed minimum that cannot be rushed regardless of how quickly other work proceeds. Attempting to compress this timeline is exactly how waterproofing failures happen.
