At least 75 to 90cm of clear walking space around major furniture pieces, and more around any door swing. A living room that looks impressive in a render but leaves no room to move comfortably is a common outcome of skipping this step.

It works well if your household entertains often and the combined space is large enough to define distinct zones through flooring, lighting or a partial partition. In a smaller flat, a separated layout can actually feel more spacious than a single undivided room.

Spending disproportionately on the sofa while under-investing in lighting design. Lighting has an outsized effect on how a room feels for a comparatively modest cost, and it is the element most often treated as an afterthought.

Lighter wall tones, furniture with visible legs rather than boxy bases, and a single large rug rather than several small ones all read as more spacious. A false ceiling with recessed rather than hanging fixtures also helps in a room with lower ceiling height.
