Working Out The Breakeven

Short stays clearly favour renting
A full 2BHK furniture set costs ₹1.8-3 lakh to buy. At a typical ₹6,000 monthly rental, buying only becomes cheaper past two to three years — and that ignores resale loss on the purchase route.

Quality varies more than price suggests
Two providers quoting similar rent can offer very different furniture condition. Ask to see the actual pieces, not a catalogue photo, before committing.

The exit clause matters more than the rent
Read the notice period and any charge for early return. Some providers charge a penalty equivalent to a month's rent for ending before the minimum term.

Damage terms are where disputes happen
Get a written condition record at delivery. "Normal wear" versus "damage" is exactly the ambiguity that costs tenants their deposit.

Furnishing A Rental Without A Long-Term Commitment
Furniture rental has grown considerably in Indian metros precisely because it solves the two biggest problems of a short-term stay: a large upfront cost, and furniture you cannot easily move or resell when your lease ends. The trade-off is a monthly cost that, over a long enough period, exceeds the price of buying outright.
Where The Breakeven Actually Falls
A full 2BHK furniture set costs roughly ₹1.8 to ₹3 lakh to buy new. At a typical rental of ₹6,000 a month, that is 30 to 50 months of rent before you have paid the equivalent of the purchase price — but that comparison ignores resale value, which for furniture is usually poor, often 20 to 30% of the original price after a couple of years.
Accounting for that resale loss, renting typically remains the cheaper option up to roughly two to two and a half years of use, after which buying starts to win. If you know you are staying beyond that horizon, buying is usually the better financial decision — renting is at its best for the genuinely short or uncertain stay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I choose the specific furniture or only from a catalogue?
Most providers work from a set catalogue with a few finish or colour options rather than fully custom selection. If specific pieces matter to you, ask to see them physically or view recent delivery photos rather than relying on catalogue images alone.
What is a typical lock-in period?
Three months is common, with a penalty — often equivalent to a month's rent — for ending before that. Read this clause carefully if there is any chance your stay could be shorter than expected.
Who pays for delivery and pickup?
This varies by provider and is sometimes bundled into the rent, sometimes charged separately. Confirm both delivery and eventual pickup costs before signing, since pickup fees are occasionally higher and less prominently advertised than delivery fees.
What if a piece of furniture is damaged when it arrives?
Document it immediately with photographs and notify the provider before use. Most providers will replace or repair without charge if reported promptly, but waiting to report damage makes it harder to prove it was not caused by you.
Is furniture rental available for a partial set, like just a bed?
Yes, most providers rent individual pieces as well as full sets. This is often the better choice if you already own some furniture and only need to fill specific gaps.
