The Traps Worth Knowing
- check_circle
Revolving is ruinously expensive
Paying the minimum due carries interest of roughly 3-4% a month, which is 36-48% a year. A card is only cheap if you clear the statement in full.
- check_circle
The interest-free period disappears
Carry a balance once and new purchases start accruing interest from the transaction date, with no grace period, until the balance is cleared entirely.
- check_circle
Cash withdrawal has no grace period
Cash advances attract a fee of 2.5-3% plus interest from day one. Treat the ATM function as unavailable.
- check_circle
EMI conversion is not free
No-cost EMI usually front-loads the interest into the price or charges processing and GST. Ask for the total repayable, not the monthly figure.
- check_circle
Annual fee waivers have conditions
Most are waived on hitting a spend threshold. Missing it by a little means paying the full fee for a year of ordinary use.

Closing cards can lower your score
Closing an old card shortens your credit history and cuts your total limit, which raises utilisation. Keep a no-fee old card open.
Card Categories Compared
| Category | Best for | Typical annual fee | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cashback | Everyday online and grocery spend | ₹500 – ₹1,000 | Category caps quietly limit monthly cashback |
| Travel & miles | Frequent flyers, lounge access | ₹2,500 – ₹10,000 | Only worth it if redemptions clear the fee |
| Fuel | Heavy car users | ₹500 | Surcharge waiver capped per statement cycle |
| Rewards | General spend, flexible points | ₹1,000 – ₹3,000 | Point value varies hugely by redemption route |
| Secured against FD | Building or repairing credit | Nil – ₹500 | Limit capped at 80-90% of the deposit |

Choosing And Using A Credit Card Well
Used properly, a credit card is free short-term credit with rewards attached and a strong contribution to your credit history. Used carelessly, it is the most expensive borrowing available to an ordinary consumer — revolving interest of 3 to 4% a month works out at 36 to 48% a year.
The dividing line is simple: clear the statement in full, every month. Everything else — which card, which rewards, which fee — is secondary to that one habit.
Matching A Card To Your Spending
The best card is the one that rewards what you already spend on, not the one with the most impressive benefits list. Work out your annual spend by category first, then calculate what each card would actually return on that pattern, net of its fee.
A ₹10,000-fee travel card returning 3% is worth less than a ₹500-fee cashback card returning 1.5% unless you spend over ₹4.5 lakh a year in its bonus categories. Run the arithmetic before being persuaded by lounge access you will use twice.
The Utilisation Trap
Credit utilisation — the balance reported against your limit — is roughly 30% of your credit score, and it catches out people who pay in full every month.
The balance reported to the bureaus is the one on your statement date, not after you pay. Spend ₹90,000 on a ₹1 lakh limit and pay it off entirely, and your report still shows 90% utilisation for that month, which can cost 40 to 60 points.
Two fixes: pay down the balance before the statement generates rather than after, or ask for a limit increase so the same spending represents a smaller share. A higher limit you do not use improves your score.
Frequently Asked Questions
What credit score do I need for a card?
Around 700 for most unsecured cards, and 750 or above for premium products. Entry-level cards from the bank where you hold a salary account are sometimes issued at lower scores. With no score or a damaged one, a secured card against a fixed deposit is issued without a credit assessment and builds history from scratch.
How does the interest-free period work?
Purchases made just after your statement date get the longest grace, up to about 50 days; purchases just before get as little as 20. The period only applies if you clear the previous statement in full. Carry a balance once and the grace period disappears entirely — new purchases start accruing interest from the transaction date until the whole balance is cleared.
Is paying the minimum due safe?
It keeps your account from being reported late, but it is financially damaging. The minimum is typically 5% of the outstanding, so the balance barely moves while interest of 3 to 4% a month accrues on the rest. A ₹1 lakh balance serviced at the minimum takes over a decade to clear and costs more in interest than the original amount.
Should I close cards I do not use?
Usually not, if there is no annual fee. Closing a card reduces your total available limit, which raises utilisation on your remaining cards, and closing an old one shortens your average account age. Both lower your score. Keep no-fee cards open with a small recurring charge on them. Close fee-charging cards you genuinely do not use, ideally just after the fee cycle rather than just before.
Are reward points worth chasing?
Only if you would have made the spending anyway and you clear the balance monthly. A typical reward rate is 0.5% to 1.5%, while revolving interest is 36% to 48% a year — a single month of carried balance wipes out a year of rewards. Also check the redemption route. Points redeemed against a statement credit are usually worth far less than the same points against airline miles or a specific catalogue.
What is the real cost of a cash withdrawal?
A cash advance fee of 2.5 to 3% of the amount, plus interest from the day of withdrawal with no grace period at all, plus GST. Withdrawing ₹20,000 and repaying it a month later typically costs ₹1,200 to ₹1,500. Treat the ATM function on a credit card as unavailable.
