It is generally discouraged in classical Vastu, particularly not facing the bed directly, though many urban homes with limited space do accommodate a small unit in a bedroom corner away from the bed. A separate nook or a living room corner is the preferred alternative where space allows.

East or north are classically preferred for facing while worshipping, which typically means the idols themselves face west or south — plan the unit's orientation with this in mind, not just its wall placement.

Both are common. A door helps keep the space visually contained and dust-free when not in use; an open design integrates more seamlessly with an open-plan living area. Choose based on how the space is used daily.

Soft, warm lighting is standard — bright white or cool lighting is generally avoided as it can feel harsh for a space meant to be contemplative. A small integrated light within the unit, supplemented by ambient room lighting, usually works well.
