What Moves Your Score
- check_circle
Payment history — the largest factor
A single payment more than 30 days late can cost 50-100 points and stays visible for years. Nothing else you do matters as much as paying on time.
- check_circle
Credit utilisation
Using more than 30% of your card limits drags the score down even when you pay in full. The balance on your statement date is what gets reported.
- check_circle
Length of credit history
Closing your oldest card shortens your average account age and can lower your score. Keeping a no-fee old card open is usually better than closing it.
- check_circle
Credit mix
A blend of secured borrowing such as a home or auto loan and unsecured borrowing scores better than unsecured alone.
- check_circle
Hard enquiries
Each formal application leaves a mark. Several within a few weeks reads as distress. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and never harms it.
- check_circle
Errors on the report
Wrongly reported defaults and loans that were closed but still show open are common. Disputes take 30-45 days, so check well before you apply.
What Each Score Band Means
| Score | Rating | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 800 – 900 | Excellent | Best rate, fastest approval, fees often waived |
| 750 – 799 | Very Good | Qualifies for the headline rate at most lenders |
| 700 – 749 | Good | Approved, typically 0.25-0.50% above the best rate |
| 650 – 699 | Fair | Approval uncertain, materially higher pricing |
| 550 – 649 | Poor | Most banks decline; NBFC rates much higher |
| Below 550 | Very Poor | Secured products only; rebuild before applying |
CIBIL is one of four RBI-licensed bureaus alongside Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark, and your score differs slightly across them because lenders do not report to all four identically. Each bureau must provide one free full report a year on request.

Your Credit Score And What It Costs You
A credit score is a three-digit number between 300 and 900 summarising how reliably you have repaid borrowed money. Lenders use it as the first filter on every application, and it determines not only whether you are approved but at what price.
The financial consequence is larger than most people assume. On a ₹50 lakh home loan over twenty years, the difference between a 780 score and a 690 score can be 0.75% on the rate — roughly ₹5.5 lakh in additional interest. Improving your score before applying is often the highest-return financial task available to you.
What Actually Moves Your Score
- check_circle
Payment history — roughly 35%
A single payment over 30 days late can cost 50 to 100 points and remains visible for years. Nothing else you do matters as much as paying on time, every time.
- check_circle
Credit utilisation — roughly 30%
Using more than 30% of your total card limits lowers your score even if you clear the balance monthly, because the balance on your statement date is what gets reported.
- check_circle
Length of history — roughly 15%
Closing your oldest card shortens your average account age. Keeping a no-fee old card open and lightly used is usually better than closing it.
- check_circle
Credit mix — roughly 10%
A blend of secured borrowing such as a home or car loan alongside unsecured cards scores better than unsecured credit alone.
- check_circle
Recent enquiries — roughly 10%
Each formal application leaves a hard enquiry. Several in a short window reads as distress. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and never harms it.
Repairing A Damaged Score
There is no legitimate quick fix, and anyone offering to delete accurate negative information is selling a fraud. What does work is straightforward and takes three to twelve months.
Start by pulling your full report from all four bureaus and reading it line by line. Errors are common: loans you closed still showing open, accounts that were never yours, settled amounts reported as written off. Each bureau must investigate a dispute within 30 days, and correcting a wrongly reported default can move a score by 80 points or more on its own.
Then bring every account current, reduce card utilisation below 30%, avoid new applications entirely for six months, and let time do the rest. If you have no active credit at all, a secured card against a fixed deposit is the standard way to rebuild a history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does checking my own score lower it?
No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and has no effect whatsoever, no matter how often you do it. Only hard enquiries — generated when a lender pulls your report for an actual application — affect the score, and even those recover within a few months.
How often is my score updated?
Lenders report to the bureaus monthly, usually within 30 to 45 days of your statement or EMI date. So a payment you make today may not show for a month or more. This lag matters when you are repairing a score. Start at least three months before you intend to apply for anything significant.
Why do my scores differ across bureaus?
India has four RBI-licensed bureaus — CIBIL TransUnion, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. Lenders do not report to all four identically or on the same schedule, and each uses a slightly different scoring model. A 20 to 40 point spread is normal. Lenders typically pull one or two, most often CIBIL, so check that one at minimum.
How do I get my report free?
The RBI requires every bureau to provide one free full credit report per calendar year on request. Requesting it directly from each bureau in turn gives you four free reports a year. Many banks and apps also provide free ongoing score access. Those are usually genuine soft checks, but read what data you are agreeing to share in exchange.
How long does negative information stay?
Most negative entries, including late payments and defaults, remain visible for seven years from the date of the event. Settled or written-off accounts also show for seven years and are viewed particularly poorly. A settlement is worse than full repayment. If you can afford to close an account in full rather than settle, do so — the difference in how lenders read it is substantial.
Can I get a loan with no credit history at all?
A thin file is treated cautiously because there is nothing to assess. Options include a secured card against a fixed deposit, a small consumer durable loan, or a gold loan, all of which build history. Six to twelve months of clean repayment on any of these usually produces a usable score.
